Song Review: Indie Artist Michael Medrano Pledges "No More Tequila" On Infectious New Release

Los Angeles-based Michael Medrano has been proving his worth with impressive singles over the past year – “Heal" alongside Steve Grand, "Love Somebody Else", "Easier” – and unlike Miss Vanjie, we never know what the artist will walk around the corner with next. That's admirable.

Medrano's latest release once again drops him into new, exciting artistic territory. "No More Tequila" is a summer-inspired pop bop, detailing a messy, alcohol-induced night out on the town. Of course, questionable decisions are made throughout. Fighting with a boyfriend? Check. Losing your friends? Check. Calling an ex at 2am? Check.

Produced by frequent collaborator Shiftee, the new release was quickly crafted after a wild adventure out in Hollywood. "No More Tequila" sheds blinding light on real-life experiences, triggered by countless shots and blackouts. All misdeeds are eventually brought into the light. Safe to say, alcohol just speeds up the process.

After stealing a boyfriend’s credit card to call a Lyft into town, the artist now looks back at his bad behavior with a clearer lens. After swearing off the Mexican delicacy, yet still advocating for the rush it brings, Medrano surprisingly shows no guilt or remorse for his actions. “I fell asleep in someone’s bed, I don’t regret it, I’m chasing highs with salt and lime until the morning”, he sings.

“I was actually really wanting to write a fun song for the summer,” Medrano says of the release. “I had never really approached a song from this angle and I wanted to switch it up from my usual heavy-hearted singles. I love digging deep, but for this one, I decided to just sing out everything that happened the night before. All events are real and true, whether or not I’m proud of them!”

Infectious production, a subtle flamenco-twang, an anthemic chorus, and relaxed lyrical content carry the pop anthem. “No More Tequila” is a swirl on conflicting emotions and realization, similar to the feeling of a substance rush subsiding. As listeners make their way through the haze, Medrano’s promise to lay off the drink doesn’t sound all too convincing. Round two?
